Painting, especially oil painting, has a long history in western world. During the evolution of painting languages, there is exactly nothing but three laws: plastic language, color language and material language. The first two languages have been developed by artists in every epoque in western countries, to a very high degree, either by technique, theories, or by works of excellence. However, material language is a little too late compared with the other two languages. This is why I have chosen it as my research object. That is, to let material display as the subject of the painting: make material be the hero of the painting, let material itself talk, give it life, and then transfer the feelings and sprit of the author to enjoyers. At the same time, material is also the link of painting itself and equipment off the painting. My research method is to combine theory with practice, exploiting train of thought. I believe that, language decides relating techniques. It's not necessary to cling to established practices. Material art is still a new discipline in our country. I want to do some work on this topic, by which we can try to open the thoughts and carry forward the practice. The thesis analyzed the displaying of subject by material language in paintings and found, by practice, that there are three superiorities of material displaying: material's nature of sprite, history's nature of time and nature of the culture as a whole. And then, the thesis discussed the three natures respectively and analyzed some examples with the great masters on materials in foreign countries. Finally, it explained the theory research and practice of the author during these three years, and the graduation creation as well. The thesis is focused on the subjectivity of material and gets conclusion both by both theory and practice.
