In this thesis, the four single Chinese tones often U.S. students, who are learning Chinese in the universities in Hangzhou, are studied by the phonetic experiment. Their tones are studied on the types, lenth, pitch and range. Though the experiment, the probems of the US studendens learning Chinese tones are found and the methods of teaching them Chinese tones are given out at the same time based on the experiment as well. The results of the experiment should attribute some to our Chinese tones teaching for the overseas students. Besides the part of the conclusion, this thesis is consisted of five parts.The first part is the introduction. It introduces the found and the present status of Chinese tones acquisition on US students. The target and meaningfulness of the studying of this thesis is introduced in this part as well.The second part is the Design of the experiment. In this part, the models of characters, the students, the ways of recording and the methods of testing and analysising the data of the tones are introduced specifically.The third part is the focus of this thesis. This part is described in four sections. In the four sections, the data of the first tone, the second tone, the third tone and the fouth tone of Chinese tones of the American students are tested out and analysised and concluded in their types, lenth, pitch and range. The study shows that the problems of the US students learning Chinese tones are as following:the same types or confusion of the tones, the shorter lenth, the lower level of the pitch and the smaller range.The fourth part is the comparison between the results of phonetic experiment and it of listening and identifying experiment. The purpose of doing this is to find the similarities and differentces between the tones input and output of the US students. And the results of the two experiments are not the same.The fifth part is to give out some suggestions about the problems on the tone's type, lenth, pitch and range according to the found in the experiment and the teaching experiences of the writer.
