American Musical Exploration

Occident musical is a comprehensive art form which collects music, dance, and performance. It has extensive contents, various themes and diverse styles. Just from the history of transformation in Broadways' musicals, we can discover that pop music is the mainstream element in the occident musicals throughout the history of musicals, and this is determined by its metropolitan cultures. Music tongues within musicals are informal, popular and always in vogue, whether they belong to West London or the early American mixed. They all draw nourishments from folk music, pops, comical dance from all over the world, and then try to compose in a form which is more popular, beautiful and pleasing.The creative thinking that set the supreme principle for musicals to be welcome and acceptable goes through the whole history of occident musicals, and becomes an important weapon that makes Broadway musicals popular and prosperous. Once they comply with the above principle, they will bestow to absorb and apply it without any constraints and be free from any formats of art forms. Modernization is one of the characters of occident musicals, and it no longer applies the traditional dance forms or any simple stage techs. Modernization no longer blindly adheres to the Bisen (Japanese), but keeps with the contemporary demands of audiences, i.e. according to the tastes of audience, performs in more ways of singing.With the definition of musicals and the history of the entire 100 years' development, this paper explores the cores, creations and quest of musicals. Besides, this paper prepares us for the further understanding of musicals, and it provides the practical guidance for the original Chinese musicals.
