This paper questions the current definitions of some music theory books, harmony text books and certain scholars on "alternate-mode", pointing out the confusing concept and making the distinction among "alternate-mode", "mode-alternation" and "modulation" more exact. As basic concepts in modem national music theory and elementary musical theory, "alternate-mode" and "mode-alternation" are defined and explained in relevant textbooks by Chinese musicians. However, the given definitions in the books are different from one and another, causing confusion in students and teaching as well. The article makes a systematic, further all-round research on the concepts, by referring to concrete music works, national music morphology, music aesthetics in an attempt to make the definitions of the concepts more standard and representative, and hopefully, to serve as a special devotion to the development of the principle concerned.
