Former Soviet Union composer Dmitry Shostakovich enjoyed worldwide popularity for his all-inclusive and unique music style in the 20th century.The string quartet,which does not belong to any genre,is an important and classical literature on chamber music in the field of modern classical music.The author conducted a detail analysis about the harmonic techniques of Shostakovich’s quartet and make exploration into the characteristics of the harmonic languages in Shostakovich’s string quartet,its significant harmonic techniques and its unique harmonic style.This paper is composed of five chapters.The first chapter,"Mode of Diminished Octave and the Derivative Mode of Diminished Intervals",discusses the techniques of personalized mode in quartet.It introduces "Mode of Diminished Octave" derived from the ancient Russian tetrachord and the characteristics of its melodic rules,and the "Mode of Diminished Intervals" derived from"Mode of Diminished Octave" and the characteristics of its melodic rules respecti vely.The second chapter,"The Characteristics of Chord Structure and Harmonic Progression in the Mode of Diminished Intervals" elaborates the processing techniques of personalized mode in quartet,which can be further divided into "The Characteristics of Chord Structure and Harmonic Progression in Dominant Functional Group",and "The Characteristics of Chord Structure and Harmonic Progression in Subdominant Functional Group".Chapter Three,"Twelve Degrees in Tonality",touches upon the characteristics of modern harmonic techniques in the quartet.Starting from introducing its inheritance to tradition,the author studies how "The Formation of the Twelve Degrees in Tonality","The Note-cluster’s Techniques of Twelve Degrees" and "The Note-row’s Techniques of Twelve Degrees" are manifested in musical works from three aspects.The next chapter,"Tonality Expansion Techniques Caused by the Smooth Production of Parts and Sound Group Techniques,"introduces other personalized harmony techniques in the quartet.The first section analyzes the techniques of tonality expansion as a result of the smooth progress of parts.The second section examines the sound group techniques in "signature-type motive" and in other works.The last section summarizes the ’’Wandering Tonal Statement and the Trendy Layout of Tonality",that is,the meaning of the overall structure of the semi-phonetic harmony.Chapter Five,"Lined Texture and Jewish Factors in Texture" discussed the individualized multi-part form in the quartet,which constitutes three parts:"Normalization of the Homophony","Personalized Multi-part Form in an Extreme Writing Style",and "The Impact of Jewish Style on the Texture."Conclusion summarized specific forms and personalized characteristics in the quartet on the basis of preceding parts of the text.Shostakovich’s harmonic techniques contact with musical figure and emotional expression absolutely inseparable.Performance of harmonic techniques are available for action.
