In the Romantic period, operas of Italian and French styles are in vogue in Europe. The main characteristics of artistic features of Vincenzo Bellini and Gaetano Donizetti lie in the fact that both of these two opera singers follow the traditional aesthetic conceptions, conveying fervor and ideals with beautiful melodies. Vincenzo Bellini and Gaetano Donizetti were accomplished artists when they were young. Being comparing with Rossini and Verdi,Vincenzo Bellini and Gaetano Donizetti, maybe, are only the part of saddle between the two mountains. However, the two treasures of classical works of"Sleepwalker"and"Elixir of love", which have been being performed frequently in opera houses all over the world, remind us not to forget these two outstanding Italian opera creators who lived in the nineteenth century. Until now, many arias of their works that spread far and wide, after all, can be taken as the classic teaching material for music-lovers today. Although the two composers of Vincenzo Bellini and Gaetano Donizetti lived in Italy when Romanticism was in vogue in Europe in the nineteenth century, they created their own artistic techniques while following the general creation style at that time.In the operas created by Bellini, the tenor in voice most in use is usually very high, and the high voice appears frequently. Besides, melodies in these operas are rich in poetic flavor, coherence and grace; at the same time, these operas demand that the singers should be able to sing the grace notes and cadenzas. So, lacking"Bellini's tenor"is always the major impediment to performance of Bellini's operas in opera houses in contemporary European countries. Until now, the operas created by Donizetti have been being performed frequently in the European countries. Donizetti had the ability to explore dramatic effect and sensuous pleasure of melody, and he was good at composing melodies that have subtle differences in instinctive feel for the language for different characters. Besides, he made harmony, rhythm, interlude, change of range and chang of music give service to portraying characters successfully. In this way, it was possible for the opera singers, at that time, to display their talents through acting different characters in many operas. After Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti entered into rivalry in the field of Italian operas. It is Bellini and Donizetti that have strengthened and carried forward the creation style of Italian traditional operas. Many art forms in their works have exerted a tremendous influence on the later generations'opera creations; and some of artistic techniques have become the classic art forms of traditional Italian operas. In Bellini's works, there are many tenor arias which have beautiful melodies as well as difficult artistic techniques; while in Donizetti's works, there are a lot of classic tenor arias which have beautiful melodies. So, through researching and comparing the works created by Bellini and Donizetti form the angle of tenor arias, a deeper understanding will be gotten for the opera works created by Bellini and Donizetti. This point is of great artistic value and practical significance, and also, it will bring life and hope for the research of western operas. From the angle of tenor arias, the creation background of the works, the historical background that the artists lived in and the tenor arias in Bellini and Donizetti's operas are analysed and compared. Furthermore, the melodies of the artistic works, the structures of the musical forms and the characteristics of the characters are studied thoroughly. This thesis includes five chapters. The first chapter is about the development of western operas. Then, in the second chapter, brief accounts of the composers'lives and creations are given. Next, the tenor arias of the selected tunes from Bellini and Donizetti's operas are analysed deeply in the third chapter. After that, in the fourth chapter, the characters and the artistic techniques in the tenor arias of the selected tunes from Bellini and Donizetti's operas are studied deeply. Finally, the characteristics of the tenor arias of Bellini and Donizetti's operas are compared thoroughly.
