Ci Yuan, authored by Zhang Yan, is a famous book on the word theory written in a systemetic and unique way around the Song and Yuan Dynasty. The book consists of two parts. Part A is on the temperament theory while Part B is on the writing theory, and Zhang Yan's word theory is mainly expressed in the latter Part. Zhang Yan created the"Qing Kong"theory all his own style, and constructed a relatively integrated and rich building of word theory with the"Qing Kong"theory as the core and"Sao Ya"and"Yi Qu",which deepen the"Qing Kong"theory in the contents and form, as the complements.Taking Part B of Ci Yuan as the main research target, combining Zhang Yan's word creation, basing on the developing background of his thought on word theory and the origin of the theory, this thesis will put emphasis on his word theory—the"Qing Kong"theory. Then by examining the artistic techniques, the personal details and the influence on the future generations of"Qing Kong", an attempt of a systemetic and integrated study on Zhang Yan's word thought will be made.The thesis is primarily made up of three parts:Part one: The developing background and the theory origion of Zhang Yan's word thought. The inclination to pursue"Ya"as an esthetic beauty among the scholars and scholar-officials of the Nan Song Dynasty, the cultural tradition of the Confucious poetry and the refinization movement on the poetry altar all greatly influenced the word thougtht; on the other hand, born in a rich and powerful family, Zhang Yan was nurtured by the family atmosphere to pursue a kind of art and life aloof from politics and material, and such a personal temperatment was empted into his word thought. Meanwhile, the downfall of the nation and a life experience full of frustrations also had an impact on his word thought.Part two: Zhang Yan's word theory—the"Qing Kong"theory."Qing Kong","Sao Ya"and"Yi Qu"are three important categories put forward by Zhang Yan, and"Qing Kong"theory is at the core. In this part, the"Qing Kong"artistic outlook will be explored and disscussed from all aspects on the basis of Zhang Yan's word creations. A further understanding on the important term of"Qing Kong"will also be made by discussing on its artistic techniques. Finally, the deep personal details overflowing the"Qing Kong"theory will be explored from the perspective of social historical culture.Part three: The influence of Zhang Yan's word thought on the word thought of the later ages. Jiang ShunYi of the Qing Dynasty said in"The Collection of Word Thought","no following arguments or authors can go beyond the argument scope of Ci Yuan". Zhang Yan's"Qing Kong Sao Ya"theory has great influence on the word thought of the later generations, especially on the Qing Dynasty, for instance, the Zhe Xi Word School of the early Qing Dynasty and the following Chang Zhou Word School all inherited Zhang Yan's word thought and made development on it.Zhang Yan's word thought has unique theoretical and aesthetic values which cannot be ignored.
