Recently, as the overall national strength and international status of China are advancing, the number of people learning Chinese language all over the world increases every year, and more foreign students are coming to China to learn Chinese. However, the current educational resources can not meet the international demand for Chinese instruction. Therefore, researchers put a premium on the application of modern educational technology in solving problems concerning the lack of educational resources. With the development of computer technology, Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) has become one important aspect in the application of modern educational technology. More and more software have played a major role in language acquisition. Powerful graphic, video, verbal and audio processing capacities of the computer enable people to learn a foreign language more effectively. Meanwhile, researchers have gained important insights into the Natural Language Processing (NAP) field. Some mature technologies have been applied in many fields. By combining NAP technologies and multi-media technologies, researchers can develop a CAI system based on NAP technologies to further intellectualize CAI. This has become an important research interest in the application of CAI and NAP technologies. In the present study, the researcher reviews the current studies of NAP and Chinese information processing, and investigates on the reliability and feasibility of the application of automatic Chinese text segmentation technologies in teaching Chinese as a second language. Given the practice of teaching Chinese as a second language in China, the researcher has designed two systems, i.e., computer-aided reading system and computer-aided compiling of instructional materials. In the system design, the researcher also probes into the readability of Chinese texts, and analyses the factors influencing readability from the perspective of vocabulary. The researcher proposes a readability determination technique based on statistics of graded vocabulary, and establishes the standards for readability determination. The feasibility of this technique has been verified by experiments. The exploration provides theoretic analysis and experimental evidence for the application of CAI and NLP in teaching Chinese as a second language. The studies on the application of NLP in teaching Chinese as a second language are only limited to theoretic level and modeling. There is an urgent need for adequate application of those technologies in practical and highly effective instruction system in teaching Chinese as a second language, and this is also the direction of the researcher's future efforts.
