Style and charm are a pair of categories in Chinese national traditional aesthetics. In particular, they are the core problems in the Chinese traditional art theory. Chinese music attaches gteat importance to "style and charm" . "Style" is the internal power of musical beauty, while "charm" is the external manifestation of musical beauty. The "style" in the Chinese zither performance art refers to that of life and art. "Charm" refers to the "charm that may convey its spirit" . In the Chinese zither performance art, they not only display their respective characters, but also are an integral whole by cooperating with each other. A work is vivid because of its style and is beautiful because of its charm.The research and discussion on Chinese national musical instrument performance art begins mostly from performance skill, and rarely from the perspective of aesthetics, especially on Chiense zither,which has been researched and discussed by few people.The cultural tendency of Chinese zither art and the long Chinese cultural art tradition are coming down in one continuous line. When the heavy and massive music pieces of western symphony troupe spring up at our ears , what we feel is their convulsion and sensation, while when listening to the music of Chinese zither , we feel a plenty of quietness and peace from the charm brought by the rubbing, slipping and trembling of our left hands. The music of Chinese zither is serene, gentle and profound, with a long linering charm. What we get is an aesthetic feeling quite different from that we get from Western music.In the music of Chinese zither, the performer will vibrate even a simple monotone by chanting or rubbing, making the people feel the aura of life. The tone of Chinese zither music is not left to disppear linearly after being played out. Instead,the aftersound is often treated deviously. This is a feature of performance treatment for Chinese monotone melody music. In particular, the "charm" caused by the curved movement of monotone arising from the treatment of aftersound by the such techniques as pressing, rubbing, chanting and vibrating in Chinese zither performance, makes the people feel a sort of rhythm of life, which forms the style and feature of Chinese zither music of "having both tone and charm" .This thesis makes a respective illustration of "style" and "charm" from the perspective of Chinese classical aesthetics, also analyzes the application of "style and charm" in Chinese zither performance art, and finally discusses the important role and significance of style and charm in Chinese zither performance art.To us Chinese zither players, it is of profound significance for us to understand the unique beauty of this musical instrument more accurately to understand the style and charm of Chinese zither performance art from the perspective of Chinese traditional music aesthetics by tailoring Chinese zither art to culture.
