As an important branch of literature, modern essay is closely connected with the modern media from the very beginning. It went into a blooming era especially after the reform of Shen Daily ? Free Talk during 1930s. Taking the essays in Free Takl(among 1932-1935) as its main research object, this thesis studies the contribution which such media as newspapers and periodicals have done toward the development of modern essay in the way of crossing research combining journalism/media studies and modern literature. This article includes three major chapters besides the preface.Chapter one introduced the reform of Free Talk and the development of free speech atmosphere. It researches the external conditions under which modern essay could develop rapidly, in the view of its None-exclusive Policy, the Free Writing practice, and the active criticism & debate.Chapter two mainly explains the influence of Free Talk to the literary function of modern essay. By the influence of newspaper's supplement in 1930s, modern essay formed a popular taste. In the same time, its capacity and range of displaying were expanded, and some other functions such as representing history, public opinion and criticizing social reality have reached an unprecedented degree.Chapter three further discusses how newspaper supplement's literary style influenced modern essay in stylistics. The literary style of essays adapted to the development of newspapers and periodicals at that time, evolving changes in various fields such as subject, structure, language and style... etc. This chapter elaborates the actual achievement of modern essay through the analysis of specific texts. |
