In new time writers, Bi Shumin distinguished herself with a special style of writing when she emerged in the literary arena in the late1980s. We can feel intensely the writer's motherly affection, sympathy, lenience and kindness by reading her works. Taking Bi Shumin's humanistic feelings of sympathy as its perspective, the present thesis generalizes the characteristics of their embodiment in her novel writing, and analyzes the reasons for the formation of this writing style, and then discloses the importance and value of her writing in contemporary literary arena.Chapter One: Clinging to Sympathy and Care for Human Beings: Bi Shumin's Style of Novel Writing. This chapter elaborates on the specific representation of Bi Shumin's humanistic feelings of sympathy in her novel writing.Part one: the pathetic speech about life. It analyzes Bi Shumin's humanistic feelings of sympathy for man's living conditions. 1) Life is a form of existence marching towards death. A probe is made into the writer's philosophical thoughts about the noumenon of life. 2) The perfecting of life and thinking about the care for man's dying. By taking care of ordinary people's dying, a discussion is made of the importance to care for man's death. This represents the writer's concern about the fundamental issues facing human beings. 3) Caring for man's living conditions. Here another probe is made into the care for the living conditions of ordinary people, especially those disadvantaged groups. This fully represents the writer's profound humanistic feelings of sympathy.Part two: the ultimate exploration of human nature. Bi Shumin's works focus on the general human nature and make a discussion of how human beings can perfect and improve themselves. 1) Calling for and guarding of a beautiful human nature. By exploring the ordinary person's human nature, a discussion is made of guarding and bringing honor of a really, friendly and beautiful human nature. 2) Making prescriptions for the weaknesses in human nature. For example, in her novel Red Prescriptions, by depicting the drug abuse, she discloses the universal weaknesses in human nature. It embodies Bi Shumin's ultimate concern for man's own development. Chapter Two: Peculiar Life Experiences and Artistic Pursuits: The Formation and Evaluation of Bi Shumin's Style of Novel Writing. This chapter expounds on the main factors for the formation of Bi Shumin's writing style as well as its significance in contemporary literary arena. Besides, a brief analysis is made of the limitations of this kind of writing.Part one: the main factors for the formation of Bi Shumin's writing style. 1) Peculiar life experiences. Bi Shumin's twenty years'experiences in the army and medical practice help her form feelings of sympathy and lenient temperament. Moreover, three kinds of life experiences as a doctor, writer and psychiatrist exert great influence upon the formation of her writing perspectives. 2) Literary traditions and the cultural background at the end of the 20th century. As she has inherited the humanistic traditions in Chinese literature, Bi Shumin, with a decadent cultural background at the enc of the 20th century, consciously joins in the army of writers to reshape the humanistic spirit among contemporary intellectuals, and she manifests her constant pursuit for the humanistic spirit with humanistic feelings of sympathy in her works. Part two: the evaluation of Bi Shumin's novel writing. 1) The spirit saving of the common people. The sympathy and care for the common people in Bi Shumin's novels, be their depictions of living conditions or fundamental discussions of human nature, embodies the spirit saving of the common people to the utmost degree. 2) The peculiar texts written by contemporary women writers. Bi Shumin does not just stay on the level of women's perspectives. Instead, she keeps on writing about those permanent issues in the life of human beings and probe into the fundamental questions concerning man's development. To some extent, she goes beyond the provincial ideas of sexism and makes her works models of"trans-gender writing". 3) The limitations of Bi Shumin's novel writing. Too much dependence on her own experiences makes it hard for her writing to break the limitations of life. Furthermore, the lacking of space in the detailed narration makes up the main shortcoming in the narration of her novels. Conclusion: Among the few writers who strive for spiritual pursuits in contemporary literary arena, Bi Shumin can be said to be really peculiar. She expresses her great sympathy and care for man's destiny with her humanistic feelings of great sympathy, which adds a kind of peculiar spirit charm to literary development and makes clear the existence meaning of the spiritual value of literature.
