During the process of language study, listening is an important means of absorbing and consolidating language information and cultivating the abilities of speaking, reading and writing. Therefore, the teaching quality of Listening in College English, a necessary part of English teaching, has an immediate effect on students'abilities to receive language information, train and apply basic skills of language learning. It is worth contemplating for teachers and researchers how to effectively carry out listening teaching and improve students'ability of listening. This thesis, by analysing the application of task-based language teaching in listening, is to discuss the provisions of teaching design and teaching activities in such teaching pattern, and to discuss new ways of how to improve students'listening ability in terms of survey, document and theory analysis.In listening teaching of College English, task-based language teaching is applied to decompose teaching aims into several teaching tasks with real conditions. Students, guided by the teacher, realize the objects and taste success by perceiving, experiencing, participating, cooperating, and so on, which stimulates the interest of students and improves their ability as a whole.This thesis consists of four parts.The first part begins with the contradiction between the fact that the development strategy of relying on science and education to rejuvenate the nation provides a large demand for English talents and the fact that students of our colleges possess a poor ability to use English comprehensively, which implies the necessity of the research. Then, the researcher analyzes the significance of task-based language teaching theory and finally indicates the objects, methods and thinking frames.The second part discusses the task-based language teaching theory, listing some linguists who have contributed a lot to put forward and perfect the theory. Then, the thesis discusses the theoretical basis of task-based language teaching with reference to language acquisition and constructivism. At last, the detailed meaning of task-based language teaching is illustrated by specifying"task"and the nature of such teaching pattern.The third part shows that it is worth studying how to improve students'listening ability by a survey analyzing the present situation and problems of listening in College English. One of the problems is the formality of the listening class, which results from students'initiative without being aroused. This part, by analyzing task-based language teaching in and out of our nation, concludes that it is supposed to be applied to the listening of College English.The forth part deals with the procedure of task-based language teaching in listening class with examples: the preparations before listening, the demonstrations during and the supplements after listening. Also, as to how to have an effective attempt, the researcher mentions the aspects worth thinking in task-based language teaching in listening, namely design, teachers, students, etc., in which design is the focus.At the end of the article, the author analyzes the merits and the drawbacks of task-based language teaching in listening together with the researcher's practice and indicates the effectiveness of task-based language teaching in listening is to be further discussed and tested.
