In China's modem music history, the music education at school has occupied a pivotalposition. "Today, we should particularly consider music education as our toppriority.'"'The music lesson is absolutely indispensable for any school." From thevehement sayings like those, we can know the importance of music education. Becauseof the favorable location and the long history of Qingdao, the new-system schooleducation has arisen earlier and also gradually developed into an music education systemwith local flavors. As the school music education is considered to be one of theimportant clues for us to understand the development of Qingdao's modem musicalculture, it is apparently important to explore and study its developmental states inQingdao. According to the development of Qingdao's history and the backgrounds ofschool music education in different periods in China, this article divides the Qingdao'sschool music education into formative period (1897-1928),initially-established period(1929-1938) and the tortuous period of development(1938-1949) in general.Furthermore, based on the original and its writer's latest historical materials, it hasdetailed discussions, on the curriculum arrangement, content, teaching materials, qualitiesof music teachers and so on. Besides, this article also has made a conclusion about thecharacteristics, influences and problems of Qingdao's school music education duringdifferent developmental periods.
