This article talks about the introduction of school music education in modern times in China. The way of the concrete investigation is: to discuss the social ground and process that our recent school music education has brought in by inspecting the history background of which the western culture has had a gentle effect on Chinese culture and the causes and methods by the early religious school music education, modern-time building the school rules and import of the western musical theories as well as the expositions and analyses of the aesthetic education idea in modern times. In a word, this article turns its eyes to the history of music education, which goes with its time order and adopts to the combination of description and argumentation, which investigates the social ground of the introduction of music education in China in modern times, And process as well as cause and curriculum, to wholy and accurately seize the quality, result, historical place of the school music education in Late Qing Dynasty and Early People's Republic.This article includes not only preface and conclusion but also five other chapters. In the preface, including the analyses, the reasons, the current situation, the goal and meaning of the article's topic.In the first chapter, there are two problems concerned. One is the main history process of which the western culture has had a gentle effect on China's culture in modern times and it has been divided into substance, system and idea. The other is about industrial education which follows the substance, especially the causes of gymnasium, painting and the analyses of their time, school they were from. The introduction and starting of the two subjects are in order to cater the need of the industrial education.Its function is to develop the students' skills of practice and intellectual ability in order to produce practical talents. So we can't say that painting course in that period has no functions about art education and it can't be replaced by the idea of modern courses. It also reflects the school music education after the painting course doesn't have the practical function. So the music course wasn't listed in school courses with painting course. And it also reflects their differences between their natures and functions.The second chapter has an emphasis on the characteristics of church school music education. It includes 3 sides: the content and goal of music education, music material, music teachers and teaching methods. It points out that our early school music and songswere improved not from church music but from the earliest new style school——churchschool to introduce the western music education style to China, It brought into active play in many sides of the introduction of western music knowledge and the cultivating of...
