| The Shadow Play has been popular in China for almost one thousand years, and it is one of the important cultural phenomenon in Chinese history. In a period of time, Shadow play is one important ways of entertainment and spiritual needs in people's traditional social life. It is filled with different functions in different area and cultural district. Through over one thousand year's development and evolution, shadow play is still popular in many towns and villages around China. In the past decades, the Shadow play has went abroad and spread to many countries around the world. It attracts the attention of many scholars from German, France and Japan etc. to do investigation and research in China.With a history of over 1000 years, Tongbai County Shadow play is one of best preserved with its own characteristics in China. The artistic characters and its cultural meaning ness constitute the special ways of performance, direction of values and aesthetic value which make it popular among the native citizens. The shadow play is often shown in some occasions like wedding ceremony, baby's birthday and even on someone's funeral to prey for bless ness and to eliminate plague and disasters. On the existing research literature, there are more account of the origins of the development, arts modeling, drama scripts of Tongbai Shadow play, but there is less study on music systematically. In fact, the Tongbai Shadow play music is its soul. It's warm and gentle vocals, rugged and strong play develop a unique artistic charm. The author went to Tongbai County three times in 2006, started the field survey of the local opera. The author filmed and recorded artists'live performances and collected the music by the method of observation, interview, literature, comparative analysis, content analysis and other scientific studies. Focused on its music features, aesthetic implied cultural meaning,the inheritance and further development in the modern societies, the author develops his own points and arguments. |
