Study On Urban Water System Of Sui And Tang Chang' An City

By inspecting the China's ancient cities especially the Sui and Tang's capital Chang'an City's urban water system's construction history, this paper hopes to analysis Sui and Tang Chang'an city water systems and understand its designideas,structure,construct technology and the its actual use,and concludes its construction and management's advantages and loses, then draws some lessons which we can learn from it.Based on ancient literatures and previous research, with the information of the past few decades' archaeological excavations of Chang'an City, this paper analyses Chang' an's five main canals and makes a comprehensive study to Chang'an city's wells and its drainage ditches. The author thinks that the drainage ditch's design flaw makes it not fully playing its role, and residents can only use seep wells as domestic wastewater treatment, resulting in contamination of groundwater, and impacting the residents' use of groundwater. Then this paper recalls the ancient cities' water system construction history, and summarizes the ancient cities' experiences and lessons on constructing water systems, and proposes a series of references for the building of the modern cities.
