Fairy Caves "new Theory

You Xian Ku(游仙窟), as a special novel written by Zhang Zhuo(张鷟)in the earlier Tang dynasty, is different from the novels produced before and after in terms of style, diction and person. This thesis is based on the study of historical artifacts. It is made up with two parts, one is the analysis of the novel, the other is the research of the historical artifacts. Analysis is made in the four aspects: 1) the raiment of characters such as Shiniang(十娘),Wusao(五嫂)and handmaids; 2) the potraying of the banquets; 3) the poems on artifacts for the sake of flirting; 4) the contemporary literary forms such as rhythmical prose, Hesheng(合生), satirical poems and the traditional pornographic writings. The conclusion is that You Xian Ku(游仙窟),with a self-consciousness of novel as a literaty form, constitutes a connecting link between what comes and what goes after in the history of classical Chinese novel writing.
