"Neo-realist literature" was a creative trend from the late 1980s and early 1990s that produced a style of novel that had a far reaching impact upon the Chinese literary world. During the same period the post-reform realist novels formed an extremely dynamic creative trend in neighbouring Vietnam's modern art circles. The author analyses the economic, political and social background and reasons that led to the two literary trends. On this basic, the paper focuses on depiction and a comparison of similarities and differences between two kinds of literary trends. The two trends have similar origins, both arising out of a climate of economic development and a changing system of society. Amidst this particular historical background, the "modern realist literature" novels and the post-reform realism novels both conform to historical features of the time. In terms of expression of reality, character description and creative description both are different from previous trends. This thesis brings to light the new characteristics and features of these new styles of novels by comparing them with stylistically traditional novels. In conclusion the author analyses the successes and failures as well as the advantages and disadvantages of these novels in the literary world. Although China's "Neo-realist literature" has achieved significant success and widespread influence, viewed as a movement on the whole there are significant shortcomings; Vietnam's post-reform realism novels also contain flaws that the authors themselves need to spare no effort in exploring.
