The aim of this thesis is to study and analyze ; traditional wood engraving techniques, with a focus on techniques such as Gonghua printing, gravure, embossing, wet printing and so forth. With the rise and development of multimedia, digital prints became the popular trend in recent years. However, I chose the watercolor printing technique because I wanted to analyze its different characteristics at a deeper level. These characteristics include the esthetics of water, wood, printing and their charm. After understanding and analyzing how other contemporary artists use the watercolor printing technique and these four characteristics, I then applied this concept to my own work."Shadows" is the theme of my work. From the point of view of visual perception 1 and psychology, the figurative use of the shadows show the uniqueness and richness of the human heart and the inner world. Making use of the special characteristics of various types of media and all kinds of shadows, I combined them with the techniques of watercolor printing to show the different meanings of the shadows. Regarding the use of technique, I opted for water-based paint and Chinese Xuan paper for their unique characteris tics and connotation. Then I merged them with the watercolor printing technique. From the subtle color changes, we can perceive anotherside of the human heart- The radiant world of the shadows.
