Yun Shouping, one of the Six Art Masters in Early Qing Dynasty, was an outstanding artist in the Chinese painting art history. His main success in painting is his development of"Mo-Go Skills", in his days when many other painters still stuck to the rigid and traditional styles. Breathing a fresh air into the art field, Yun Shouping were followed and learned by many painters, and his art career once experienced a peak in Chinese art history. Wang Hui, one of his friends and another famous painter of his time, once commented"When he painted a flower, Yun Shouping first set it in a vase, and then tentatively painted it on the paper again and again, until he gained its real color and found the lively spirit."Real color and lively spirit"is characteristic of his art style"Mo-Go Skills"demonstrating his love of nature and his breakthrough with the classical treatment of flower painting. The author of this paper thinks that Wang Hui, and many modern artists did their research and study on Yun Shouping's"Mo-Go Skills"flowers from the standpoint of his creation process, skills, artistic functions and spirits. In the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of art criticism focused on the analysis of artistic style elements, experienced a trend of the analysis of art forms, not analysis of artistic thoughts and evaluation of holistic art performances. Herihrich Wolfflin (1864-1945), an esthetician and art historian of Switzerland, was regarded as the third greatest art historian after Winckelmann and Burckhardt. He combined the culture history, psychology and artistic form analysis into a historiography system. In this book,"Principle of Art History", he laid his emphasis of research on art works themselves, not on the artists of those works, striving to create a history of art works without the name of artists. His initial task was to explain and expound the changes in art styles. Therefore,"Principle of Art History"is thought of as the best statement of his ideas and theories on art history. The author here attempts to apply his ideas on the art form analysis to the analysis of Mo-Go Skills, though short-lived but largely influential, which flourished during the early years of Ming and Qing Dynasties. This thesis consists of three parts:Part one: Discussion of the origin, formation and characteristics of Yun Shouping's"Mo-Go Skills"including their maturity process and indications. Part two: Analysis of Wolfflin's art history theories, principles of art form analysis in his book"Principle of Art History"and their application to the analytical effectiveness on Yun Shouping's"Mo-Go Skills".Part three: This thesis firstly gives a match between Mo-Go Skills painting style and Wolfflin's generalization of the 17th European"painterly style"; secondly, an analysis of artistic forms of"Mo-Go Skills"flowers fromthree aspects: modeling, coloring and composing and lastly, staring from the point of view of graphics, the thesis gives a thorough explanation to the"Mo-Go Skills"flower paintings'characteristics.
