The late time of Donghan was a miserable period. The eunuchs grasped the power, natural disasters and wars happened one after another, people had lived a hard life. In order to avoid disasters, many cultivated person like to be a hermit rather than an office. As an upright man, Xunyue was also at home at the excuse of illness. Xunyue, because of his out of office backgrounds, he knew what life is and what people want. He has a unique view of political and society. Because of the Emperor thought Honshu is too long and difficult to read, in the third year of Jianan, under the order of the empire, Xunyue started to write Hanji, and completed two years after. There were five aims of this book: first, exposit morality and justice by narrates history. Secondly declare the laws and regulations. Thirdly unblock the history and nowadays. Fourth, publicizes the meritorious service. The fifth, praise the capable man. Once this five aims achieved, there was hopeful to rebuild a prosperous Empire.While Chunqiu and Zuozhuan built the traditional of Biannianti, in which the writer arrange the event according to time sequence. When Western Han, the emergence of Jizhuanti which devotes in portraying the character, symbolized this style is superior to the previous one. Hanji adopted the traditional of Biannianti, and make this style a big progress. These two types have advantages and disadvantages respectively. Hanji absorbed the advantages and the language is refined, the matter is abundant. Hanji inherits and has developed the critical traditional of Chunqiu and Zuozhuan, some has the mark Xunyue to say, some has direct critic and at the end of each emperor's records. This is the essence part of this book. As an outstanding historian, Xunyue has some profound understanding of history events. Having the overview of Western and Eastern Han, Xunyue has a progressive thought which surpass Bangu. The primary intention of Hanji absorbed the fine tradition, do not forget the experiences and lessons while narrate history. The narration of Hanji is succinct and the discussions profound. Hanji is full of passionate in the narration.The historical value of Hanji has been pointed out, but not the value of literature.
