Abstract/Summary:
Fan Ye collected widely all kinds of materials recording the history of the Eastern Han Dynasty to write the Houhanshu(後汉书),the thesis focuses on the text relationship among them, through text comparison, investigating variants from rewriting motivation and stylistic differences, finally using the variants to collate texts. The thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter 1 is an introduction, mainly on significance of the topic, and research status about variants and the historical records of Eastern Han Dynasty.Chapter 2 is mainly about the textual relationship.Firstly, the six main text sources of Houhanshu(後汉书)are explained. Then through examining different texts,it is found that Houhanshu(後汉书)and Dongguan Hanji(东观汉记)are more consistent. And summarizes the six types of rewriting by the author of derivative texts. Finally, the problem of text processing where the source of the text cannot be found is discussed.Chapter 3 focuses on Fan Ye’s motivation for rewriting.Through comprehensive analysis of textual variants,it is believed that rewriting is influenced by rhythm, style, and language development.Chapter 4 focuses on the stylistic differences between Dongguan Hanji(东观汉记)and Houhanshu(後汉书).Differences in the use of"yu(於)"and"qi(其)",the expression of"reach",modal particles, and the degree of colloquialism of dialogues indicate that the language of latter is more formal than the former. And some of dialogues in former retain the spoken characteristics, while the language of latter tends to be conservative, whose corpus value is lower than that of the former in reflecting the epochal nature of the language.Chapter 5 mainly uses variants and text relations to collate Dongguan Hanji(东观汉记)and Houhanji(後汉纪),and correct more than 30 errors in the two books.
