Huxi Small Sand Crossing The Study (1899-1949)

This paper focuses on Xiaoshadu urban area in west of Shanghai. It runs through all of industrialization and urbanization process in this area as a mainline, exploring the promotion mechanism of industrialization in the process of urbanization in Xiaoshadu area and the reasons for the rising labor movement, attempting to draw the outline of changes in this urban area and refine the contours of urban characteristics and recover the original appearance of this urban area, in order to enrich the history of the Shanghai Research.Xiaoshadu area was still a waste land in the mid of 19th century. The "Treaty of Shimonoseki" signed in 1895 and the over cross-border of roads of Gonggongjujie in 1899 attracted a large number of Japanese textile industries, such as Naigai Wata Kaisha.Ltd to invest and build factories in this area, forming Xiaoshadu industrialization zones ultimately. The interaction of industrialization and urbanization made this area developed rapidly, becoming a famous modern textile industrial zones and workers gathered areas in Shanghai. Since Xiaoshadu was a new developing industrial urban area, it attracted a large number of people to come here for employment. The area promptly became a habitat of the lower and middle classes, forming the well-known shantytowns–Syrup Lane. Xiaoshadu area became an"Only Corner"in modern Shanghai as a result. But at the same time the big Zimingzhong area where it is the cross-road intersection of Xiaoshadu Road and Laobosheng Road developed into a commercial centre in west of Shanghai .The industrialization process of Xiaoshadu area constituted a" double day "features. In addition, the overseas Chinese community in Japan and the labor movement are the main features in this area.Xiaoshadu area was the cradle of the birth of Chinese labor class. The workers in this area boarded the stage of history in the "May 4th" campaign early. Around the founding of the Communist Party of China Marxist theory was widely spread. A lot of party leaders and the early leaders of labor movement lived in Xiaoshadu area. They trained a large number of workers and activists. Under the leadership of the party, the labor movement in this area was always in full swing at different times. In the famous"February Strike"and"the 30 May"campaign, the workers in Xiaoshadu area took the main force of labor movement. The magnificent labor movement in Xiaoshadu area took an important role in modern Shanghai history and even the modern history of Chinese labor movement.Referred to the process of urbanization and characteristics of Xiaoshadu area, we can draw: The interaction of industrialization and urbanization is the fundamental motivation in the formation and development of Xiaoshadu urban area. Furthermore, the nature of the industrial urban area determines the basic characteristics of Xiaoshadu urban area.
