The thesis focuses on the relationship between science and the Literary Revolution in New Youth. The thesis views that science was accepted as the most heterogeneous element which could not be found in Chinese culture by the authors in New Youth. So when science met with Chinese culture, not only itself changed, but it also influenced Chinese culture in many aspects including the Literary Revolution. The introduction makes general description on the present studies on New Youth. Most of the studies incline to study science and the Literary Revolution separately, which omit the relationship between them. The first chapter focuses on the important role New Youth played in the course during which science becomes the most authoritative thing in china. Instead of gezhi, the Chinese word kexue, which reflected the objectivity of science, was generally used to denote science just before New Youth published. But kexue was respectfully called Mr. Science in New Youth, which reflected the respect of people for science. Kexue then became the only authority in china. This change was due to the Scientistic Movement initiated by the community of science words which made by New Youth, Science and some other magazines. New Youth focused on some scienctism when Science focused on the spread of science. The third chapter studies the knowledge structure and the scientific awareness of the colleagues of New Youth. Many of them learned science when they were young. Some even mastered on science. They almost occupied some special knowledge structure including old knowledge which is Chinese culture and new knowledge which is western culture. They accepted the latter and discarded the old knowledge without hesitation when they found conflicts between them. They formed a new world view by learning science and used it to criticize Chinese culture, including the old literary. The third chapter studies the scientific factors in the Literary Revolution. There was inevitably some influence by the scientific awareness of the colleagues when they started the Literary Revolution. The colloquialism advocated by Hu Shi experienced a baptism of science to some extent. He regarded himself as a scientist during the Literary Revolution. The concentration on Darwinism of Chen Duxiu made himself incline to Naturalism. Zhou Zuoren considered that science was both necessary and interesting in daily life. Lu Xun considered science as a tool which was as helpful as literary to change the nationality. The conclusion reviews the reciprocity between science and literary during the Literary Revolution. Meanwhile, there are still some disharmonies which also make sense for modern people.
