This present thesis analyzes Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago from the perspective of symbolism, exploring symbolism and its meaning in this novel. In Doctor Zhivago, Pasternak makes great use of symbolism with much craftsmanship, endearing to embed different symbols in the fiction in a natural way, which contributes to our resonance to the plot, characters and the theme. In the mean time, symbolism itself helps to convey the author's ideas more freely and smoothly. This present thesis is divided into four chapters:Firstly, the first chapter gives a detailed account of symbolism and Pasternak's literary creation, and tries to find out the characteristics of symbolism in his literary works and the relationship between the symbols and the Doctor Zhivago.Secondly, the structure of Doctor Zhivago and symbolism are included in the second chapter. Apart from that, the role of the symbol of light and two symbolic motifs, namely death and storm, which are decisive in determing the structure, is also discussed in this chapter.Thirdly, the third chapter talks about the symbols and their meanings in Doctor Zhivago, in the respect of characters, natural scenery and detailed discriptions in the novel. Finally, the fouth chapter elabrates on the techniques of using symbolism and the significance of such techniques. Most scholars, for a long time, have been paying excessive attention to the genre of fiction and characters, but less on the writing techniques.
