In the northern part of Nepal, there is a mountain ethnicity called Gurung. Being good at singing and dancing, Gurung people are warmhearted. Integrated with religion, history, mythology, legend, ceremony and tradition, Gurung music culture is a comprehensive art embodied complexity, diversity and history. As one kind of oral culture, the traditional music and dance in Gurung can be regarded as the alive-fossil in Nepal art culture history. To look for the old traditional music culture, the Finland ethnomusicologist, Pirkko and his assistants came to Nepal from Helsinki, despite the remoteness on trip and the obstacle in language. Within ten years, they did case research and analysis twice on Gurung music culture, and wrote an ethnomusicology work entitled "cultural cognition in music". This paper gives a pedagogical research on the cultural cognition in Gurung music, analyzing the dynamic elements in the cultural changes of Gurung music, penetrating the research value of cultural cognition, and exploring the deep meaning embedded in Gurung culture. Furthermore, the author reflects modern school music education using phenomenology, interpretive theory, praxial philosophy and cultural theory, expecting that will be helpful for the practice of ethnomusicology and the research of music education.
