With introduction of the art of Buddhism into China, Chinese painting had being influenced by foreign cultures since the Six Dynasties, which became prominent in Tang Dynasty due to Chinese rulers' encouragement and acceptance for aspects of foreign cultures. Focusing on Chinese native culture, Chinese people widely reached the essence of foreign cultures, which later was absorbed and integrated with Chinese own culture so that these new creation and development made Chinese culture splendid and glamorous during the Tang Dynasty, especially for the artistic presentation of figure creation. Figure paintings took on the picture of people's image in real life at Tang Dynasty, with magnificent colors, dynamic figure movements and refined dressing, which took place of the presentation of figure image being humble and respectful in the former times.The thesis attempts to give a systematic and comprehensive study on the characteristics, course and social conditions of "hu hua" of figure paintings in the Tang Dynasty. ("hu hua" refers to Chinese painting was influenced and integrated by and into arts of Hu ethics, located to the north of China at that time.)The thesis can be divided into the following chapters:Chapter 1 briefly introduces the former and current studies related to the research and the study methods adopted in this thesis.Until now there are lots of papers and writings dedicated to mural paintings in coffin chambers in the Tang Dynasty, which all offer detailed descriptions. But on the whole, these researches take the social and cultural perspectives and the study has been seldom found from the view of painting skills and mural paintings in coffin chambers, especially no further study on the formation of characteristics of "Hu Hua" paintings.With the rare well- preserved mural paintings of the Tang Dynasty, and the retrieved references, the outcome of the study has showed the masters' highly developed painting skills at that time, which represented and echoed the styles and skills of the outstanding painters like, Daozi Wu, Xuan Zhang and Fang Zhou, etc. And the study has attributed significantly to a holistic view of history of the Tang Dynasty Paintings.The purpose of history study is to help human being learn from history and better facilitate the present development from different perspectives. Through the study of mural figure paintings in muffin chambers in The Tang Dynasty, a clear picture can be took on about the positive, optimistic and upward spirit of people of Tang Dynasty. Without the taking in of foreign culture, and the creation and development based on foreign cultures, there was no "splendid Image of Tang Dynasty", which has great realistic significance on how to better absorb, learn from others and develop Chinese Painting.The thesis focuses on the representation of "Hu Hua" paintings in the Tang Dynasty with the comprehensive study of retrieved archeological references, historical references and well-preserved paintings.Chapter 2 explores the "Hu Hua" tendency of mural figure paintings in coffin chambers in the Tang Dynasty through the comparisons and contrast of figure image between the well- preserved paintings in the Tang Dynasty and paintings in the former times, especially the women images.Chapter 3 discuses the approaches to "Hu Hua" artistic representation of mural paintings in the coffin chambers in the Tang Dynasty, including the concave-convex method, the color representations as well as the character modeling method since the Six Dynasties.Chapter 4 analyzes the reason for the formation of "Hu Hua" of Figure paintings in the Tang Dynasty.Finally is the conclusion, in which the mainly aspects of "Hu Hua" and its influences are stated.
