Design has become an important strength for the contemporary global economy as the connection between it and the social development is closer and closer. A lot of chances and possibilities are created with the effort put into the design. However, China started comparatively late in this field. China's modern design was born from the industrial art, which unavoidably got limited in the development. The limitation is especially obvious in the current elementary education of art design that is essential for cultivating the design ability. After analyzing the current curriculum systems of Chinese institutes and the theoretical achievements, the author finds the key problem: the practice is missing in the elementary education. Then, the author introduces about the overseas systems, including Bauhaus, Ulm and those of America and Japan, focusing on their development histories. With the comparison between the western and Chinese systems, the author points out where the problems lie and proposes the solution, the practice-oriented system, followed by the detailed demonstration. Finally, the author concludes that the elementary courses should give importance to the basic phenomena and rules of visual arts. They should be changed along with the actual progress. The practice-oriented pattern introduced here meets the international trend and considers the Chinese characteristics at the same time.
