Martial arts novel has always been regarded as vulgar and conservative works by most fans of new-vernacular literature, because of its strong dependence on Chinese culture. It seems that, by nature, modernity is far away from the novels of this type. Is it really true? With rising of Chinese knowledge time and time again, Chinese traditional culture should be treated from a new angle. It is no longer a synonym of being backward and conservative, but a sign to the world. Modernity is given to Chinese traditional culture, meanwhile, it is also given to martial arts novel which strongly depends on Chinese traditional culture, which, of course,is the result of excellent martial arts novel writers' hard work, who always self-consciously learned news thoughts and ideas. Although, the evolution of martial arts novel's modernity is slower than new-vernacular literature, because of its own features, it is not difficult to find its process of modernity if we analyse it carefully. In the beginning of the 21th century, the emergence of martial arts novels was directly related to national passion, emboding the themes of the times, anti-imperialist and anti-feudal, and inspired the morale of the people. In the 1920's, XiangKairan made the novel out of political framework, and gave swordsmen their real character, namely, freedom; ZhaoHuanting wrote his works in words aimed at "exposing their own" as a means of promoting change of traditional Chinese fiction. In the 1930's and 1940's martial arts novels formed a peak. WenGongzhi expressed his indignation in his historical novels and his works revealed a faint idea of the people. HuanzhuLouzhu sought to write the transcendence for life, while Baiyu'S watching the world with a cold eye had essential consistency with Lu Xun's "sorrow of their unfortunate and indignation for their being dispiritedness" In the new period of martial arts novels, the excellent writers in HongKong and Taiwan made this type of popular literature reach a new height. They directly explained human nature and mentioned the awareness of the modern world in their works. In fact, at this time, popular literature and classic literaturea have formed the situation where you cannot separate one from the other. The article trys to make the process clear, while analysing the representative writers and their works of the whole 20th century, and forecasts the prospect of the type of novels in the new century. At last, the article gives some suggestions for reforming the culture of swordsmen, namely, the depicting contents of this type of novels, hoping the traditional culture keeps pace with the establishment modern culture and making some contribution to socialist construction with Chinese characteristics.
