Chinese martial arts, rich in traditional Chinese philosophy, are closely linked with traditional Chinese medical culture and religious culture.Chinese martial arts contain numerous and jumbled martial arts schools and classes, including various fist techniques, routines, and weapons of various styles and shapes. Therefore,Chinese martial arts are the indispensible part of Chinese culture. With the deepening of the “going out” of Chinese culture, some of the Chinese martial arts have already been translated into foreign languages and spread to foreign countries, gaining a lot of popularity among westerners at present. But there is still numerous martial-arts culture to be translated into foreign languages and spread to foreign countries. Therefore,to further promote the “going out” of traditional Chinese culture comprehensively, the transmitting and spreading of Chinese martial-arts culture to the world can't be neglected.Recently,Chinese martial-arts movies and TV plays have been becoming more and more popular among foreign audiences.Chinese martial-arts movies are characterized by high-efficiency of transmitting martial-arts culture,long-lasting in diffusion effect and great impact on audiences.Given this,to promote the “going out” of Chinese martial-arts,the study of C-E translation of martial-arts culture in martial-arts movies is representative and significant under the context of “going out” of Chinese culture. The Grand Master,a classic work in Chinese martial-arts movies, has earned reputations both at home and abroad. In view of its richness in martial-arts culture and great significance in the world, the thesis selects this movie as the research point to discuss the C-E translation of martial arts.According to the previous researches on the translation of martial-arts culture and The Grand Master, the thesis finds that relevant studies are mainly concerned with the following aspects: first, the choices of domestication and foreignization strategies in translation;second, the translation principles;third, the translation methods;four, the translation of martial-arts text. However, neither of them studies the loss and the distortion of Chinese martial arts in subtitle translation of martial-arts movies. Therefore, the thesis takes The Grand Master as a case study to carry on the research on this topic. To promote the “going out” of Chinese martial arts, the high-qualified and authentic English versions of Chinese martial-arts culture should be presented to target audiences without loss and distortion. That is to say,the translator should highlight the otherness of the source martial-arts culture when doing translation and retain its “exotic atmosphere” in the translated text. However, traditional translation theories give priority to the domestication of the target language and the invisibility of the source text and language, which is not suitable for spreading the alien elements of Chinese martial-arts culture to target audiences. While Venuti's resistancy translation theory highlights the visibility of the translator and the otherness of the source text and language, which coincides with what this thesis argues. So this thesis takes Venuti's resistancy translation theory as the guiding one.Under the guidance of Venuti's resistancy translation theory, the thesis draws some conclusions based on the detailed researches on the Chinese and English subtitles of this movie: first of all,the translator of The Grand Master,Linda Jaivin, tends to translate martial-arts culture by adopting foreignization strategy. In most cases, she presents a lot of excellent English versions to target audiences by adopting proper translation strategies and methods.Limited by constraints of time and space,in most cases, the translator successfully transmits the exotic culture of Chinese martial arts to target audiences, which helps them to get to know martial arts in depth;secondly, there still exist some improper translations in its English versions, which can fall into two categories of problems, namely, the loss and the distortion of martial-arts culture in translation. The thesis finds that the reasons leading to these two problems are the translator's improper adoptions of strategies of over-domestication and over-foreignization.Finally,this thesis gives solutions to solving these two problems, that is,making up for the lost martial-arts culture and rectifying the distorted martial-arts culture. The author argues that,in the process of spreading Chinese martial-arts culture to the world, the translator should try to retain,to the greatest extent, the otherness of martial-arts culture in order to reflect the difference of the source language;and present profound martial-arts culture to target audiences in order to satisfy their needs of getting to know Chinese martial arts.Meanwhile, the limitations of time, space and linguistic constraints, and the features of subtitle translation, such as instantaneity, colloquialism and non-independence should be taken into consideration.Hopefully,it will eventually contribute to the spreading and “going out” of Chinese martial-arts culture to the world.
