Viewed from any perspective,Wang Tao was always at the edge of the society under the historical and cultural background of the late Qing Dynasty。Having sit for the imperial competitive examinations for many times,he never succeeded in becoming a provincial candidate and submitting memorials didn't help him to win an access to a single official position either。He believed in the Chinese culture,and had a good mastery of the western learning.He was loyal to his motherland,but he had no choice but to "sell himself and serve the west"。Finally,he was listed as wanted by the Qing Government and had to flee abroad。It can be said that it was his experiences in that society that helped him to get advanced cultural values。Influenced by the western missionaries and the western culture for a long time,Wang Tao broke through the ideology of the traditional culture-centrality and built up a brand-new modern cultural values after his visit to Europe。In the transient modern society,Wang Tao gradually became from traditional scholar into a modern scholar.Wang Tao epitomizes culture reversion and alienation phenomenon。In short,Wang Tao's experiences brought himself great misfortune,but it was fortunate for the Chinese nation。Indeed,Wang Tao made great contributions to the changes of the modern Chinese culture。...
