The highly materialistic business environment for a long time has curbed the development of Hong Kong humanities and culture, and Hong Kong has been unable to escape the shallow impression of the "cultural desert".The central consciousness of the mainland also caused the literature of Hong Kong to be ignored before 1997 when Hong Kong returned to China. It had been described as ‘abandoned infant',‘marginal' for example in Chinese literature, which can also be seen as an opportunity.Hong Kong writers have been working hard to explore the diversity and possibility of literature.Hong Kong's modernist literature is one of the personalized teams in charge of the literature banner.Mixed with tradition and modern, modern and post-modern,eastern and western cultural characteristics, produced multiple power relations and complex contradictions such as center and periphery, city and individual, material and spirit, business system and literary field, region and whole,Hong Kong modernist literature is carrying out literary practice with differences, heterogeneity and subversion in the cultural field. With the limitation of the context of consumer culture, the main content of modernist literary expressions are the problems brought about by the highly commercialized social environment and consumerism, the context of business is also a point of view to observe how the consumer culture give the profound impact on the dissemination and acceptance of modernist literature in Hong Kong. The thesis will start from three angles: the vitality of Hong Kong's periphery, the extension of the theme of alienation, and the novel's transboundary experiment. It clarifies the historical development mental thought and morphological characteristics,to pursue significance both in the Chinese literary history and Hong Kong literary history. The full text is divided into three parts: introduction, text and conclusion. The introduction part defines some basic concepts related to modernist literature. It sorts out the relationship between the historical context, theoretical genealogy, aesthetic characteristics and so on of modernist literature in a broad sense, discuss the key qualities of Hong Kong modernism, and summarizes the research history and current situation of Hong Kong's modernist literature. The value of the topic, and the frame of this article would also be discussed. The body is divided into five chapters. The first two chapters conduct an external study of Hong Kong's modern literature through a discussion of Hong Kong's cultural environment and a comparison of geo-cultures.And the last three chapters combine textual reading in order to carry out internal research of literature. The first chapter attempts to make an overall description of the living space and state of Hong Kong modernist literature. From the operating mechanism of commercialized literature in Hong Kong,we can see that Hong Kong's modern literature, which adheres to a serious literary character, has been struggling to survive in a metropolitan environment dominated by commercial consumer culture. As producers, writers are constantly adapting themselves, trying to find a suitable path in literary ideals, market tastes and public rules. There is a certain time lag between Hong Kong's acceptance of modernism and post-modernism and the development of literature in the West.Under the influence of modernization, localization and post-modernization,Hong Kong's modernism gradually presents a mix of modernism and post-modernism.Therefore,a certain degree of fuzzy and flexible understanding of the connotation and nature of Hong Kong's modernism as a whole is allowed. In addition, the complex cultural environment where Chinese and Western cultures are intertwined gives Hong Kong's literature a "mixed" character. There are both assimilation and critical reflection from Chinese traditional and western modern literature in Hong Kong's modern literature. The second chapter explores the impact of regional culture on literature and the interaction between different regions in terms of the "marginal" state of Hong Kong. From this,we can see how to play its vitality and generate unique value as a kind of margins.Based on the clues of time in the mainland,Hong Kong, and Taiwan,a complete and continuous line of modern literary development can be obtained.Undoubtedly, the modernism movement of Hong Kong is a peak in the Chinese modern literary revolution.Hong Kong not only took over the literary fire in the special period when the tradition was broken, and assumed an important stage in the history of Chinese modern and contemporary literature, but also played the role as a transfer hub between different regions. In this sense, the significance of Hong Kong's literature cannot be rigidly discussed with the duality of the center and the margins, the existence of relativity and variability in actual situations should also be taking into account. However, due to the special value of the "marginal" state, the thesis still uses "margin" to describe the Hong Kong's experience. In the geographical layout of Chinese modern literature, the experiences of modern literature in Shanghai,Hong Kong, and Taiwan are different. There are inheritance, transformation,as well as the fusion and collision in the literature of these three.By comparing Shanghai with Hong Kong and Taiwan,we can see the profound impact of cultural factors such as social conditions, political systems, cultural environment, customs and humanities on literature,as well as different literary expressions and characteristics. The third chapter enters the analysis of the novel text in the form of case study, and mainly explores the inner ideological spirit of modern literature of Hong Kong. From the perspective of the overall development, writers from different generations show different reactions and characteristics.Liu Yichang,Kun Nan,and Ma Lang, who emerged in the 1950 s,are the pioneers of modernism in Hong Kong.Later, there are writers called the "senior generation","Mesozoic" and "New Generation",and each generation writes to expand and extend the writing field, also has its own reflection and creation. In this chapter,Liu Yichang,Xi Xi,Dong Qizhang and Pan Guoling are selected as the representatives of the four generations of Hong Kong's modern writers.Their creations reflect the changes in Hong Kong's urban consciousness and historical spirit in different periods. From these,we can see the evolution of the writing purpose and methods of Hong Kong's modernism, and the construction and breakthrough of writers' ideology.Chapter four discusses the difficulties and challenges faced by urbanites around the theme of "alienation" of modernism. As a highly alienated modern city,Hong Kong is under tremendous pressure caused by material, which makes people feel a strong sense of alienation. On the other hand,Hong Kong is also culturally inclusive because of its open and diverse historical tradition. As urban persons who has experienced alienation, writers use the image of writers to enter the city's speech and play the role of narrators. They collectively experience loss in the context of metropolises, and also seek the path of self-saving from it.The "Alienation" has created Hong Kong's unique landscape of life. From pathological market men and women to complicated materials,we find out the historical destiny of human beings under the influence of modern civilization, and contradictory relations of opposition and reconciliation of "human" and "physical" under the materialistic logic. It also explores the cultural concept of people in Hong Kong as colonials.Works of modernism in Hong Kong reflect to a large extent the fragmented colonial memory and historical consciousness of alienation. The fifth chapter discusses the exploration of Hong Kong's modern literature in artistic form and its cross-border influence on popular literature.Works of Hong Kong's modern literature pay much attention to discovering the inner world of individuals' consciousness, showing the negative psychological tendencies of decadence, ignorance and absurd indulgence of humans, which has led to questions and criticisms from some realist writers, and have caused controversy about "real" and "fiction".However, judging from the specific creative ideas and practices of modern writers, not only do they not separate the connection between realism and fiction, they also try to organically combine the two to achieve the integration of real existence with modern and postmodern content and forms. In addition, the modernists in Hong Kong attach great importance to the experimental and avant-garde nature of narrative form, technique and structure. The writers explore the various possibilities of literary expression through form innovation and stylistic transcendence.Modernism is not only attracting pure literary writers, but also influencing popular literary writers. From Gu Long's novels,we can see the fusion of existentialism and literature of martial arts. This attempt has brought popular novels to a new realm. The part of conclusion reiterates the modern significance of literature of modernism in Hong Kong, also explores the writing direction of modernity. In the sense of modernity in general,Hong Kong's literature of modernism is achieving its goal of rebelling against and breaking with tradition, both in terms of content and ideology. From the perspective of specific practical results,Hong Kong's literature of modernism has made an in-depth investigation with the city's advantages and disadvantages, and constructed a plurality of aesthetic thinking and styles.Facing the question of how to continue the writing of modernity,a return to "people-oriented" which is based on the theory of "multiple modernity",and "rewriting modernity" for the future is also inspired. The future of Hong Kong's modernity should be expected.
