There are mainly three tasks to accomplish. First, this paper is to study and discuss the basic dialects and southern dialects used in Tale of Water Margin. Then, words of Shandong dialect in this novel will be selected and categorized for analysis and interpretation. Third, this paper is to explain the specific meanings of those words as well as their function to this novel. Targeting words of Shandong dialect in Tale of Water Margin, this paper is to analyze their specific meanings in this novel and thus reveal their function as a whole to this novel.(1) Basic dialects and southern dialectsAs to what the basic dialects are in Tale of Water Margin, there has always been a dispute in academic field, with experts and scholars holding different opinions. The cause of the dispute is the abundance of various dialects used in this novel, especially the mixture of northern and southern dialects.
