Zhejiang University is a famous university of higher learning in China with long history, excellent faculty & graduates and sound reputationworld-wide. In each historic period of time, Zhejiang University excells not only in teaching and researching, but also in Public Music Education and dynamic campus musical activities. Dating back from the year 1897, Zhejiang University, which was "Qiushi Shuyuan" at the time, had set Music as its selective subject. During the tough time of anti-Japanese war and civil war, Public Music Education had taken its shape in Zhejiang University under the inspiration of a numbers of educators such as Zhu Kezhen, Zheng Xiaocang, Feng Zikai and Shen Siyan. With the influence of Public Music Education, many students at that time upgraded their taste of aesthetic appreciation and realized their spiritual pursuit. It was well-known that "Qinghua University in the North, Zhejiang University in the South" as flagship of Music Education. After China's reform and opening-up, Public Music Education of Zhejiang University revived from Cultural Revolution and established administration organization of Public Music Education at an early stage. Public Music has always be one of its selective subjects. With the development of musical and artical activities, arts associations of students have boomed with fruitful outcomes.In this paper, a combined research methodology of surveys and interviews is taken to study the public music education on the development of Zhejiang University. By reviewing the public music education of Zhejiang University at different historic periods, such as late Qing Dynasty, the anti-Janapese War, the Liberation war, the founding years of People's Republic of China, and three decades of reform and opening up. This paper also introduces elective courses in music, music associations, school activities on campus and out of the school, from which analyzing the five main features such as thought on music education, values of music education, faculty of music education, form of music education and methodology of music education. The above study will serve as a mirror for the public music education of China's higher learning institutions. A number of highlighted viewpoints will also be helpful for the further development of the common music education and research in higher learning institutions.
