This dissertation undertakes to analyze the childbearing conditions in Dunhuang and Turpan areas during the Tang Dynasty. It is composed of the preface and the main body.The preface summarizes the history and present research achievements, clarifies the research significance and its originality. The research includes two new points. On the one hand, the lower women are considered as the research object, because their lives embody the real situation of the lower classes. On the other hand, the research of childbearing which was used to be rarely studied due to the lack of historical references is now undertaken. The explanation of references is included in the preface as well.The main body is divided into there parts. The first part mainly introduces the childbearing condition of lower women in Dunhuang area during the Tang Dynasty. Ancient Literatures from Dunhuang are the primary references in this part. In addition,illuminates the status of lower women's childbearing in Dunhuang area during the West Wei Dynasty. By comparison of the childbearing conditions during the Tang and West Wei Dynasties, the characteristic of childbearing in Dunhhuang area is reflected in this part. The second part is mostly discusses the childbearing condition of lower women in Turpan area. The differences of childbearing situation in Dunhuang and Turpan areas are analyzed. Based on the analysis of the two parts above, part three looks into the factors influenced childbearing in the Tang Dynasty. The childbearing was impacted not only by the political and economic situations, but also by the government policies, religions and medicine development.
