What is the effect of emotion on creativity? On this issue, studies have not reached consistent conclusions. Some studies showed that positive emotion improves creativity, and negative emotion suppresses creativity. But other researchers hold the opposite opinion that negative emotion promotes creativity. The present study includes two experiments, which aims separately at peer attachment of undergraduates and parent-child attachment of adolescents to explore the relationship between emotion and creativity. In experiment 1,two-factor between-group experimental design was used. The first factor is peer attachment style,it has 3 types:secure, avoidant and anxious-ambivalent type;and the other is emotion,it has 3 levels:happy, neutral and sad.Take the scores of the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking(parallel task and empty jar task) as dependent variables to make MANOVA analysis. The results show that the two factors(peer attachment and emotion) have interaction;and with sad emotion, the creative scores of anxious-ambivalent subjects are significantly higher than the secure subjects. In experiment 2,just like the experiment 1,take the parent-child attachment style(completely secure, completely insecure and partially secure type) and emotion(happy, neutral and sad) as independent variables, creative scores as dependent variables to make 3×3 MANOVA analysis. The results show that interaction between parent-child attachment and emotion exists;and the creative scores of completely secure subjects are significantly higher than the completely insecure subjects when they are all happy. In short, the present study shows that in the relationship between emotion and creativity, the attachment is an important moderator;that is,on the issue of "What is the effect of emotion on creativity?",we must concern about individual attachment style.
