The Chinese painting with the ethnic groups as its main subjects refers to those reserved till today to reflect the history of the ethnic groups' development and those creations in modern and contemporary Chinese painting expressive way.China is a unified nation with multi-nationalities. All kinds and sorts of paintings taking the ethnic groups as its subjects in the history have exacted great influence upon the upcoming creations. This kind of painting could be classified into two groups according to their main contents: one is to represent the ethnic groups, their local conditions, and the landscape around their location; the other is the Chinese painting creation, in which the Chinese human spirit can be reflected by the Chinese painting's unique features. So the Chinese painting with the ethnic groups as its subjects could be studied further provided that these two aspects are understood well.This paper takes the Chinese painting with the theme of ethnic groups as its clues in order to review the related painting works in the history and classify them into three categories: a record by the ruling class of their political and military achievements; a record by the ethnic groups themselves of their local customs and the historical documents which contribute to the minority culture. This paper explores the historical background and creation style of the modern and contemporary Chinese painting in the ethnic groups. The author, through combing and summarizing this kind of Chinese painting in different historical periods, analyzes the key points that should be emphasized and problems in the contemporary Chinese painting in the ethnic groups. This paper discusses how to express the folk customs of the ethnic minorities and how to handle the present relationship between inheritance and development of the Chinese painting in the new era.In conclusion, the present Chinese painting in ethnic groups develops in the prosperous period but with some disorder. The painting techniques, the stuff to be used in painting and the focus the painters attend have gone through tremendous changes. These new ways of thinking are providing precious opportunities for the current development of Chinese painting in ethnic groups. However, extensive integration may bring intrusion to the pure painting classification. And it is of primary responsibility for the current painters to promote the Chinese painting in ethnic groups to a new level.
