The business of books presents one of the best cases for seeing the importance of joining together an economic and cultural analysis. The understandings about bookstore have changed considerably through decades. In this study, I address the question of how different strength compete with one another and shaped contemporary bookstore culture. Since traditional method of literature study is inadequate to answer the question above, culture study is my basic approach to analysis the topic. This article is composed of three chapters. The first chapter starts from the early 20th century as the beginning of modern book industry in shanghai, I chose Kaiming Bookstore, Xinhua bookstore and Season Wind bookstore as typical cases in three period, to show the change of bookstore. The second chapter discussed how some significant turning point made the customer and bookstore of today became possible. The third chapter focuses on a wider definition of bookstore, which is made up of readers, publishers, writers and bookstore managers, and how its reading community infected culture practice.
