Antonio Gramsci is one of the progenitors of western Marxism. The theory of civil society advanced by Gramsci differs from Hegel's theory of civil society with ethics significance and Marx's theory of civil society with economic basis significance. Gramsci brings the civil society under the superstructure category and sets up the conception of"Modern State= Political Society + Civil Society",which insists on the importance of the ideological leadership and values the intellectuals in modern state. Gramsci's theory of civil society based on the theory of practical philosophy is one of theoretical foundations of the western Marxist cultural criticism.Gramsci separates the civil society into the domain of ideology and culture, and starts the new dimensionality of civil society. Gramsci's theory of civil society has deep influences on the theory of post-marxist civil society and Habermas theory of civil society, and also has important academic and practical significances in the modern society.
