Verb is the core of syntax and semantic structure. Valency of a verb affects syntax and semantic structure and is the core of syntactical and semantic characteristics. Hence, syntactic and semantic characteristics of a verb is mainly represented by its ability of argument control. Valency is a semantic concern, but only by knowing the meaning of a verb one cannot grasp its valency. One has to consider the necessary semantic components controled by a verb, or the semantic collocations of a verb. This thesis takes some common Russian verbs as examples, and classifies them according to their semantic functions in order to study valency of these verbs. Then it moves on to analyze the syntactic structure and tries to find out the syntactic mode suited to valency of a verb. Therefore, it is a research that combines semantic and syntactic study.
