| Philo was a key figure to bridging ancient Greek culture and ancient Hebrew culture. The core of ancient Greek culture was Greek philosophy whose prominent feature was pursuing reason. What the Greeks pursued was what their logical rationality disclosed to them. The core of ancient Hebrew culture was Judaism whose prominent feature was to believe the One and the Only Absolute Holy God. What the Hebrews pursued was what God's revelatory principles are. By the allegorical interpretation of the Bible, Philo bridged and synthesized these two different cultures. This thesis focuses on the use of the allegorical interpretation of the Bible, especially of the Book of Genesis, in the works of Philo, and aims to find some inspiration for today's cultural communication and synthesis between the East and the West. |
