Zhou Fang was a prominent painter in the Tang Dynasty who was known to the world for painting the religious figures and ladies in the palace. His artistic style showed in the"Zhou mode"which has the characteristics of plumpness, concise lines and bright colors. These features reflect the social aesthetic custom of that period which had a profound impact to develop the portraits since China's Five Dynasties, Song Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty.This thesis aims to analysis the shape features of artistic creation in Zhou Fang's works built on the Tang Dynasty's political, economic, and cultural life . This is why he made"Zhou mode"unique and had its unique modern fashion of the times. Its produced historical roots can be divided into two parts :First, the broad outlook of forceful age laid the development of space for"Zhou mode". Tang Dynasty's brilliant ruling over the past three hundred years history pushed the feudal dynasty into a high peak of the China's feudal society. The political, economic and cultural prosperity of Tang Dynasty helped Zhou Fang to build the foundation of"Zhou mode"with a high degree of aesthetic ideas and social trends .Secondly, the inclusive spirit of the times provides a solid cultural foundation for the"Zhou mode". The liberal ideology and culture of Tang Dynasty offered an important condition for the development of the arts. Figure paintings and Buddha statues of this period is beginning to be concerned with human. The status of women also"changed". Secular characteristics like the realism portraits of ladies have entered into the artist's vision.From the artistic point of view, Zhou Fang's"Zhou mode"was mainly embodied in four aspects: the aesthetic, images ,modality and colors. First, the aesthetic characteristics of Zhou Fang's"Zhou mode''reflected the unique characteristics of the Tang Dynasty's era aesthetic fashion. This formation of artistic style mainly came from the requirements of the imperial class, the feudal Duke and the public sectors as well as the imitation from the upper-class women's pursuit of dividedly beauty. Secondly, Zhou Fang's"Zhou mode"of women's dress imaged the social atmosphere and era background. With the development of the society, the unconventional dress and exotic makeup was not uncommon. The hair style, makeup, costumes from Zhou Fang's Paintings reflected the aesthetic qualities as cool, bright and healthy. Thirdly, the demeanor of Zhou Fang's"Zhou mode"reflected the modality which is not a simple dynamic, but contains more of a person's thoughts and feelings, it is the emotional dynamic of the characters. Zhou Fang revealed the external meaning of things by tracing the images of them. He focused on the"demeanor"and"sentiment"expressions which expressed the charm of temperamentwith the help of the sentimental language. Fourthly, the color features of Zhou Fang's"Zhou mode". The designer used the colors to screen the works like"pale but dense","luxury but elegant", reflecting the decorative taste uniform of the rich colors and subtle harmony .Meanwhile, the clothes formed the dual nature of practical and the aesthetic with a popularity for a certain time . Its property determines the value of the colorful suit.Zhou Fang's"Zhou mode"made the unique nature of the artistic conception which means not only screen space for the location of segmentation and object-image relationship, but also to become an important expression of emotions from the perspective screen and permeate the painter's state of mind, ideas, and emotions. Although it had the feature of"altering from the nature", but the performance of the painter was the"heartfelt artistic conception". Zhou Fang's works has a comparison between the"reality"and the"nonentity"which showed the inner emotions like a gently rhythmic in his works.
