The term "common Chinese characters"originates from characters which are popular among people. It is also known as folk characters,unorthographical characters or wrongly written characters. Standard Chinese characters refer to the characters which are accepted by officials. On the contrary, common Chinese characters are not.Standard Chinese characters, the standardized form of chinese characters, predominate in the longstanding and well-established Chinese character system. However, the role of common Chinese characters cannot be underestimated. Standard Chinese characters and common Chinese characters are constantly changing with the development of history. After the 1st unification, a large number of folk characters come into being, especially after official script, numerous Chinese folk regular scripts arise.The book Shengwenzuankao(《省文纂考》)was written by a Japanese scholar, Matsumoto(松本愚山)in 1803. Most of the common Chinese characters in Shengwenzuankao, which the present thesis discuss, are chinese regelschrift. The present author searches ancient books and literatures to search out the same common Chinese characters. Then the author draws up the outline of the communication evolution of these characters. Through classification and analysis,the author researches the changing, pattern and laws of these common Chinese characters during there circulation process.The present thesis discusses the common Chinese characters in the following parts. The first part is an introduction, including the writting purpose, values of this thesis and the actual developing state of studies on common Chinese characters. In the second part, the author classifies the common Chinese characters in Shengwenzuankao into seven categories and illustrates them with examples. Then the author compair these common Chinese characters with other ones in ancient books and literatures in the third part, such as Japan Standard Chinese Characters, Folk created simple written characters, Songyuan Yilai Suzi Pu(《宋元以来俗字谱》),Glossaries of Kehong(《可洪音义》)and so on. In the forth part, the author combines chinese calligraphy with common Chinese characters. Final part is the conclusion of the present thesis and an appendix of the common Chinese characters in Shengwenzuankao.
