The adjective is one of three categories of Chinese content words that include nouns, verbs and adjectives. Using of adjectives can increase the vividness and image of language. The quantity of adjective is so big that modern Chinese studies seldom involve them. The article chooses polyophonic adjectives in the vernacular speech of the front eighty chapters Dream of Red Mansions as a research object, for the purposes of investigating basic characteristics of polyphonic adjectives'usage at that period.Firstly, we take function as standards and refer to meaning to divide adjectives in the text. Then we identify polyphonic words from four aspects of meaning, structure, frequency and sense of language. Polyphonic adjectives can be divided into polyphonic property adjectives and polyphonic state adjectives. On the basis of exhaustive investigations of polyphonic adjectives in Dream of Red Mansions, we analysis them from four aspects of the word-building form, grammatical function, semantic point to, comparative function. From the word-building, in addition to the state of overlapping style adjectives, the non-overlapping state of adjectives and polyphonic property adjectives have simple word-formation, joint type, verb-object type, the main predicate, partial formal, moving fill type and Add-on type, among which the last word-building type has prefix and suffix, but the infix does not appear in it. In the nature of the double-syllable adjectives, there are still a small number of synonymous adjectives, when we reverse their word-formation order, the significances keep the same or similar.Seeing from the grammatical function, acting as attributive and predicate is the functional standars to determine adjectives. But the property adjectives act as predicate more generally than the state adjectives do, and the most common usage of the latter is to be adverbial. On the semantic point, the polyophonic adjectives in the adverbial position have one-way, two-way and three-way. The polyophonic adjectives in the complement position have one-way. two-way, but three-way. The semantic points of polyphony adjectives and state adjectives using as adverbial and complement are both different in the type and number.Comparative function is for the purposes of the polyphonic nature adjectives, but including very few polyphonic state adjectives. Comparative function has three categories of pingbi, jibi and chabi, among which the chabi form is most diverse and common. Alouth the sentences which contain comparative function have various forms, they are generally based on several basic forms of type.
