I hope that people could feel the charm of Chinese traditional decorative arts through exploring its development history.Basing on comprehensive and systematic document retrieval and starting from Archeology, Industrial Arts, Esthetics, and Anthropology etc, this paper has studied Chinese traditional scrollwork's history from the provenance to outspread. From the time (dynastic sequence) and cultural connotation, I hope to systematic analysis the issue of origin, evolution, development and extension. The full-text is divided into four chapters. The first chapter focuses on the definition and the origin of Chinese scrollwork. It is started from the vortex decoration's first appearing on painted pottery in the primitive society. It shows the various forms and aesthetic characteristics of the spiral decoration through analyzing the spiral decoration in the pottery art. The second chapter mainly discusses the continuous development of scrollwork's transmutation from Primitive society to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. And under the development of society, in different historical periods, scrollwork showed different morphological characteristics, and embodied different spiritual and cultural connotations. Chapter III focuses on the cultural connotations which come from the outward beauty of Chinese traditional scrollwork, and why scrollwork could exist for thousands of years with enduring popularity. And this article attempts to interpret the root causes o f this phenomenon from Chinese traditional culture and spiritual dimensions. The fourth chapter elucidates the use in modern decoration of scrollwork and its future trends. After thousands of years, scrollwork are still full of vitality, and can be seen everywhere in modern life. It carries the traditional concept of Chinese nation, embodies Chinese nation's traditional culture connotation. It can be imagined that, with the further development of modern society, modern design will pay more attention on the scrollwork which contains abstract elements and at the same time represents the patterns of national culture.China is a place of wonder with a long history and a profound cultural background. Our predecessors provided a valuable legacy on the design ideas, experience and skills for their future generations and bequeathed abound resources to the modern design. All these subjects need us to do in-depth research and study. For thousands of years, the ancient design ideas which came from the evolution of scrollwork should be analyzed deeply and to be draw lessons from. And it is very significant to confirm that scrollwork occupies an important position on Chinese traditional decoration art. Modern design should not just use the national culture as an embellishment, but view from a higher position to understand our predecessors'ideas and feeling which is contained in their creation and thereby understand ourselves and the whole world. The traditional decoration is not the ultimate goal we are pursuing. It is an important content for the modern design theory and ultimate goal for study on traditional decoration and sign through analyzing the research of scrollwork's evolution, The carrier of scrollwork research is substance. In this study I will as much as possible attach my pictures for reference. However the cultural relics and archaeological excavations of the scrollwork are limited. Furthermore the scope I studied is not broad enough, so there must be a lot of omissions in this paper. I hope teacher could give me some suggestions.
