Cultural Comparison Of English And Chinese Euphemisms And Communication Strategy

Language is the part of culture.Euphemism is a language phenomenon, it is a cultural phenomenon, also, a general social phenomenon. With the development of our society, people are now aware that different cultural, social background has effected socializing in a special way.By courtesy of previous studies on euphemism and in viewing of the major principles discussed in pragmatics, the present thesis contrasts the differences of euphemism in a transverse and longitudinal way. It emphasizes what is euphemism, the communicative purposes of euphemism and its communicative strategies in the transverse angle.And the thesis contrasts longitudinally the differences of euphemism in English and Chinese from various aspects.In a word, this present thesis contrasts the euphemism between the two languages in order to be familiar with the linguistic features of euphemism and to be aware of the differences between the target culture and the native culture.Based on the analysis of cultures between two languages,it advances a series of communicative strategies and provides advisory opinions for explaining euphemism thoroughly and brings certain enlightenment function by the time.
