In order to advocate the sanctity and solemnity of Buddhism, the worship for Sutra and Buddha was demonstrated in the substantial part of the retributive stories, which was the inheritance for the strong Buddhist missionary color in Wei and Jin Dynasties. From the comparison of the number of Buddhist worship in the stories of retribution, we can see the prosperity of people for the Diamond Sutra in the period. The stories of retribution showed the different results of the people who believed or not in Buddhism from the positive and negative aspects. This is a performance in which Buddhism obliged and induced Buddhist believers.Second, It was an important historical period for the process of the localization of Buddhism in Tang Dynasty. Buddhism should be coordinated the relationship with Confucianism and Taoism for merging into the Chinese culture. The stories of retribution reflected the absorption and integration of Buddhism from Confucianism and Taoism, especially Confucianism in the period.Third, the retributive view is a moral court in ancient society, which has the social function of the "stark choice". For conducts which were harm to lives and the interests of others, it often gives the strong moral condemnation on the way of evil. For conducts of cherishing lives, exercising filial piety, emphasizing on virtue and honesty, it gives moral support and encouragement.Fourth, the stories of retribution is a emotional abreaction for injustice. Such as the cruel abuse of jealous hostess to servants, the disregard of officials to common people's lives, the avengement of higher officials for the subordinates in the name of public interests, the aggrieved parties can not uphold justice and wash grievance through normal channels (such as legal means), they can only hope the spirits to punish the evil. This is actually the abreaction of the feelings of resentment of the small fry in society in a non-normal manner.
