Lewis and Clark Journey laid the groundwork for West Expansion, embodying courage, determination and persistence in American culture.Native woman Sacagawea, with baby on her back, as interpreter and guide of the Corps of Discovery, helped Lewis and Clark accomplish the significant exploration in Western history across the Northern American Continent. In early twenty century, the long-silencing Sacagawea was brought to the attention of scholars and public. Coues rediscovered and praised this unique Indian woman, who later was promoted to be American heroine to justify Western Expansion and to develop suffrage movement, by people inherited frontier tradition and dichotomy of savage/civilization.I am going to in this thesis explore the narrative of Sacagawea by journalists, editors and the scholars, and the process of Indian Squaw transforming into Indian Princess as well as the assessment of Sacagawea and the culture behind it.
