Today higher vocational students have accounted for more than half of the students who are studying in higher education colleges because of the mass higher education. They will be the backbone of the advanced technology in the future. In order to work better and faster later, they must have the ability to acquire the knowledge of the new industry because knowledge updates quickly nowadays. So the English teachers of higher vocational colleges should not only teach knowledge but also develop the students' ability. However, it is acknowledged that many higher vocational students are relatively poor in English and have been weary of learning it. How we can make the higher vocational students learn English well and have the ability of working in the world is an important issue which is placed in front of the English teachers of higher vocational colleges. Based on higher vocational students' characteristics and the researches on autonomic learning, the author thinks cultivating higher vocational students' ability in English is one of the best ways to develop their comprehensive ability and improve the English teaching in higher vocational colleges.The author mainly uses the document method, the interview method and the comparison method to write this paper. Firstly, the author elaborates the selected topic background, the research goal, the significance, the contents and the methods which are used in the study, and summarizes the domestic and foreign related topic research. Secondly, the author discusses the basic theories of cultivating self-studying English ability of higher vocational students from humanistic psychology, constructivism and cognitive psychology, and defines the concepts that are related to the research. Thirdly, on the basis of a lot of reading the documents and interviews with vocational students and teachers, the author points out the main existing problems in the ability of higher vocational students and analyzes the main causes of the problems. Finally, the author discusses some specific measures on the training of higher vocational students' English autonomous learning ability.
