There are various reasons why Zhang was so fascinated with dress-up and so interested in Carefully crafting the clothes of the female charecters in her novels. The interaction between the various elements formed Zhang Ailing's unique complex. Among these elements, there was her nostalgic memory for the material prosperity and substantial luxury of the family; there was cultural conduction and modern enlightment of the relatives and friends; there was distress caused by shortage of substances and there was also psychological compensation mechanism to break up the repression and seek for satisfaction.Chapter two mainly reveals the relationship between the portrayal of costume and feminine characters in Zhang Ailing's novels. As for the relationship between the portrayal of costume and feminine characters, it mainly consists of three aspects, namely, evoking the personage, revealing the personalities and prominencing the destiny of characters.
